We’ve long been a fan of the Shoalhaven and when the local council goes to the trouble of producing a dedicated dog-friendly holiday guide, is it any wonder?
Our latest trip took us to Culburra and the dog-friendly beach house, Lucy’s Escape. The house is named after the owners’ beloved dog and pictures of the eponymous Lucy are dotted around the house. Lucy was a staffie who adored her beachside getaway from the Big Smoke of Sydney – which isn’t surprising, given the place is just a two-minute stroll to the off-leash sands of Culburra Beach.
The four-bedroomed house is comfortable, light and airy, with an undercover deck and barbeque area to the rear. The deck overlooks a lush and private garden, bordered by fruit trees and with an expanse of lawn that’s perfect for ball games.
Harry proved himself to be a champion sniffer dog by recovering no less than five tennis balls lost within the depths of the shrubbery.
We all spent hours in the garden, with Harry appreciating the chance to roam freely and investigate the many different scents, while Him Indoors and I certainly appreciated the hammocks.
Harry’s enthusiasm for the beach has waned since his illness so we didn’t explore far beyond Culburra Beach. We attempted the on-leash trail at Abrahams Bosom Reserve (access from Beecroft Parade in Currarong) but Harry was, as usual, having none of it.
There are more off-leash beach options nearby, including at Currarong and Callala Bay, so it’s worth checking out the Shoalhaven Pets on Holiday guide for details (plus information about other walking trails and dog-friendly accommodation).
